Dodgers Unable To Solve Michael King In Loss To Padres

The Los Angeles Dodgers saw their seven-game winning streak come to an end as they dropped the series opener against the San Diego Padres, 2-1, in a pitcher’s duel.

Both Tyler Glasnow and Michael King had the strikeout stuff working and limited the opposing offenses all night.

The Dodgers could not solve King at all as he allowed just two hits over seven shutout innings. He did walk three hitters, but also struck out 11.

Their only real opportunity to score against King came in the third inning when Mookie Betts walked and Shohei Ohtani singled, but that was followed by a pair of strikeouts from Freddie Freeman and Will Smith.

King became the first opposing pitcher to strike out at least 11 Dodgers hitters since Shohei Ohtani did it for the Los Angeles Angels last June in a 12 strikeout performance. However, Ohtani allowed one run over his seven innings that outing.

While King was nearly unhittable, the same could also be said about Glasnow, who was arguably better overall as he allowed one fewer hit and only one walk.

Glasnow pitched seven innings with 10 strikeouts, but he made one mistake that was taken advantage of as he left a fastball up and over the middle of the plate to Luis Campusano, who capitalized with a solo home run.

That was the only hit the Padres had against Glasnow, who has now gone at least seven innings in three of his last four outings, and four of his last six. he now holds a 2.54 ERA across 56.2 innings with a 0.86 WHIP and 73 strikeouts.

The Dodgers tied the game in the eighth inning after King left the game as Betts singled and Ohtani doubled against Yuki Matsui. That was followed by a sacrifice fly from Freeman, which brought home the first run of the game.

Michael Grove took over in the ninth with a tie game, and allowed a double to Campusano and then a single to Luis Arraez, which provided a walk-off hit.

Blake Treinen pitched the eight inning and struck out two in a perfect frame. He has retired all nine batters faced since returning off the injured list.
